With its pine forest, crystal clear waterways, peaceful shores and houses that reflect ancient Ula arhitecture,Akyaka, located on the eastermost point of Gökova Gulf,is a slice of heaven…
Akyaka,Where the first settlement was seen in 2600 BC, was firstly a neigborhood tied to Kozlukuyu (Gökova) village comprised mainly of simple houses around the jetty, the gate to the sea of Muğla.It became autonomous in 1971 and in 1992,a town.To the north of Akyaka are pine forest mountains that rise to one thousand meters above sea level,Kadın and Azmak Rivers where fresh water boils to the east, and green plains.Unlike other areas that suddenly become famous,Akyaka remains as beautiful as it has ever been because in 1988,it was declared a ‘Nature Protected Area’.The city of İdyma was founded in the area in which today’s Akyaka is situated. The settlement of İdyma extended east of todays’s Akyaka up to the village of Kozlukuyu (3 km) and the quarters of the İnişdibi and Yazlıtaş up to the ancient port that was near the forest campsite.İn the 3rd century BC Idyma developed relations with Oniki (Twelve) Islands and took on the name Rhodesian Paraea by entering the administration of Rhodes and during this time that continued until the end of the 1 st century AC,it was socially very lively.During Byzantium, the area took on the name of Saint Kosmas and in his memory;a church with southen axis walls was build at the forest camp. The sustaining walls of the small and large apses of the rather large church still stand today.
There are no concrete buildings or connected structures in Akyaka. All the houses are an example of a synthesis unique to Akyaka as they were constructed using a combination of the old houses in Muğla’s Ula district together with contemporary architecture. The houses stand out for their elegant woodwork in the interior and exterior, the wide, lush gardens and the anique Muğla chimneys… But the most important detail of the ceiling workmanship.Nail Çakırhan is the person who has ensured that Akyaka architecture remains so special.Actually,he’s the person who ensures that Ula architecture remains alive and well in Akyaka.
You can enjoy a day trip on a boat from Akyaka harbor and discover to surrounds. The most impressive stop along this tour is no doubt Sedir Island or Cleopatra Island. A great number of towers and made of smooth cut stone, the Apollo temple and the church that was built later in its place, the well-protected theater that is still standing the agora and the ancient harbor ruins of Sedir Island are definitely places to see.Aside from Akyaka’s clean seashores, sands and beaches decorated with palm trees, there is another waterway that is highly worth a mention and that is Kadın Azmağı by taking a 15 minute walk or canoe ride. The river is famous for its crystal clear water, untouched nature and fish restaurants. The most important feature of Azmak Stearm which is its western extension from Sakartepe in the Taurus Mountains is that despite being a few meters above sea level the water is crystal clear and the rate of its flow is very high. The soda water Azmak flows out to Gökova Gulf starting at the east of Akyaka and following a 2 kilometer path. Akyaka, the source of crystal clear cool and abundant waters is truly the heart of Gökova…
